What is a continental Shelf? We have 3 definitions to help you out.
Scientific Version: A gently sloping, shallow area of the ocean floor that extends outward from the edge of a continent.

Short Version: A shallow area in the ocean.

Ask.com Answers: The continental shelf is where the land undersea exist until reaching the continental slope (deep sea).
